Beatrice is a strong independent woman from Montaillou, last stronghold of the Cathars. It is the 14th century and the Inquisition seeks out followers of this heretical Christian sect. Betrayal is commonplace; fearful people give evidence against family and friends; heretics burn at the stake. When her lover the priest is seized, the shadow of suspicion falls on Beatrice too. It’s through the Inquisition’s records that her life is revealed to us.
